Public safety and accountability

Public safety must be one of Cave Junction’s highest priorities. Residents, businesses, law-enforcement officers, and visitors deserve a community where laws are enforced consistently and repeat criminal behavior has meaningful consequences.

As mayor, I will work closely with the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, local businesses, and residents to develop a coordinated public-safety strategy. I will review the city’s contract for additional sheriff services to ensure taxpayers are receiving clear, measurable results for the money being spent.

I will also explore whether Cave Junction can legally and financially help provide dedicated prosecutorial resources for crimes committed within the city. Effective public safety requires more than making arrests—it requires timely prosecution, accountability, prevention, and access to assistance for people who genuinely want help.

Residents deserve transparency about crime, enforcement, and public spending. I will advocate for regular public reports showing how city-funded law-enforcement resources are being used, what results are being achieved, and where improvements are needed.

Cave Junction can become known as a safe and welcoming community, but achieving that goal will require cooperation, consistent enforcement, responsible spending, and leadership willing to demand accountability.

Government Transparency

Residents should not have to search through complicated procedures, visit City Hall, or pay unnecessary fees to understand how their city government is operating. Public information should be complete, understandable, and easy to access.

As mayor, I will advocate for publishing the city’s adopted budgets, financial audits, meeting agendas, minutes, major contracts, ordinances, and other important public records on the city’s website. City Council meetings should be livestreamed and recorded so residents can watch them even when they cannot attend in person.

I will also support giving residents the ability to view and pay their water and sewer bills online. When significant decisions are being considered, the public should receive adequate notice, clear explanations, and a meaningful opportunity to be heard before the decision is made.

Transparency builds trust. Cave Junction residents deserve honest answers, accessible records, and a city government that conducts the public’s business openly and responsibly.

Responsible Budgeting and Affordable Utilities

Every taxpayer dollar should be managed carefully, openly, and with a clear purpose. Cave Junction needs realistic budgets, timely financial audits, responsible long-term planning, and safeguards that protect essential services without placing unnecessary burdens on residents and businesses.

As mayor, I will examine city spending, contracts, staffing costs, and major expenditures to ensure the public is receiving the greatest possible value. Budget decisions should be based on documented needs, measurable results, and the city’s long-term financial health—not short-term fixes.

Water and sewer services must remain reliable, but they must also be affordable. Before supporting future rate increases, I will ask for a clear explanation of why the increase is necessary, how the additional revenue will be spent, and what alternatives have been considered. Residents should be able to understand their utility bills and see how their payments are being used.

I will aggressively pursue grants, low-interest infrastructure financing, and other outside funding to help repair aging systems and reduce the financial pressure placed on local ratepayers. Responsible budgeting means maintaining essential infrastructure while respecting the financial realities facing Cave Junction families, seniors, and small businesses.

Infrastructure and Grant Funding

Reliable water, sewer, streets, and other public infrastructure are essential to Cave Junction’s safety, livability, and economic future. Deferred maintenance becomes more expensive over time and can lead to emergencies, service interruptions, and sudden financial burdens for residents.

As mayor, I will advocate for a comprehensive assessment of the city’s infrastructure, followed by a prioritized long-term plan identifying the most urgent repairs, estimated costs, available funding, and realistic timelines. Residents deserve to know what condition these systems are in and how the city plans to maintain them.

I will aggressively pursue state, federal, and regional grants, low-interest financing, and partnerships that can help pay for critical improvements without placing the entire burden on utility customers and property owners. Grant opportunities should be evaluated carefully and brought before the public whenever a local match or long-term obligation is required.

Cave Junction also needs timely financial audits, accurate records, and well-prepared project plans to remain competitive for outside funding. Strong financial management and advance planning will allow the city to pursue opportunities before deadlines pass.

Our city should address problems before they become emergencies. Responsible infrastructure planning will protect public health, strengthen local businesses, support appropriate growth, and preserve affordability for residents.

Economic Development and Local Jobs

Cave Junction needs an economic-development strategy that supports existing businesses, welcomes responsible new investment, and creates dependable local jobs. Our residents should have greater opportunities to build successful careers and businesses without leaving the Illinois Valley.

As mayor, I will work with local businesses, property owners, community organizations, and regional economic-development partners to identify barriers to growth and develop practical solutions. The city should provide clear permitting requirements, reasonable timelines, and consistent communication so business owners and investors understand what is expected.

I will explore the feasibility of establishing an urban-renewal district that could reinvest future growth in property-tax revenue into downtown improvements, infrastructure, public spaces, and other projects that encourage private investment. Any proposal should include careful financial analysis, defined boundaries, public participation, and protections for essential public services.

Economic development should also celebrate what makes our community unique. Through the “Rediscover Cave Junction and the Illinois Valley—It’s the Lifestyle” campaign, we can promote our outdoor recreation, local history, events, restaurants, shops, and other small businesses. Encouraging visitors to stop and spend money locally can help strengthen our economy.

Cave Junction has tremendous potential. With thoughtful planning, dependable infrastructure, a business-friendly approach, and strong regional partnerships, we can grow our local economy while preserving the small-town character that makes our community special.

Parks, Recreation, and Quality of Life

Parks and recreational opportunities are essential to a healthy, connected, and welcoming community. They give children safe places to play, help residents remain active, bring neighbors together, and make Cave Junction more attractive to families, visitors, and businesses.

As mayor, I will support maintaining and improving our parks, exploring opportunities for pickleball courts and other recreational facilities, and preserving important community assets such as the Illinois Valley Golf Course. I will work with residents, volunteers, local organizations, and regional partners to identify the recreational improvements our community wants most.

I will actively pursue grants, partnerships, sponsorships, and other outside funding to help pay for these improvements while minimizing the burden on local taxpayers. Recreational investments should be affordable, responsibly planned, and accessible to residents of different ages and abilities.

Quality of life also means clean and welcoming public spaces, safer neighborhoods, community events, and opportunities for people to connect. By caring for our parks and strengthening recreation, we can build community pride, support local businesses, attract visitors, and make Cave Junction an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.
